Eucalyptus psyllid

Ctenarytaina is a genus of insects within the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. The most prominent species is Ctenarytaina eucalypti, which is widely recognized as a significant pest affecting eucalyptus plantations and ornamental plantings globally. These small insects thrive by feeding on the tender tissues of their host plants.

The primary hosts for this pest are species belonging to the genus Eucalyptus. The insect typically targets young, succulent growth, making nurseries and young plantations particularly vulnerable to infestation. Its impact is most pronounced in regions where eucalyptus is cultivated as an ornamental or commercial forest crop.

The life cycle of the psyllid is closely tied to the flushing periods of the eucalyptus trees. Adults lay eggs on young leaves or shoots, and the emerging nymphs feed by sucking the sap. A hallmark of their presence is the secretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold on the foliage, further stressing the plant.

Damage caused by Ctenarytaina manifests as distorted, curled, and discolored foliage. Heavy infestations lead to stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and premature leaf drop. In severe cases, the vitality of the plant is significantly compromised, leading to the dieback of terminal shoots.
