Description
Systematic position. Ctenarytaina peregrina is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This tiny sap-sucking insect is a specialized pest that predominantly targets various species within the Eucalyptus genus, causing significant physiological and cosmetic damage.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest are Eucalyptus species. It poses a substantial threat to nursery stock, young forest plantations, and ornamental trees, where it can drastically reduce the vigor of the plant population.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Ctenarytaina peregrina is closely synchronized with the flush of new growth on eucalyptus trees. Adult females lay eggs on young leaves and stem tips. Upon hatching, the nymphs begin feeding on plant sap and excrete a sugary substance known as honeydew, which often facilitates the growth of sooty mold.
Damage and economic impact. Infestation by this psyllid leads to stunted shoot growth, leaf curling, and chlorosis. Heavy infestations can cause significant defoliation, leading to the decline of tree health. Furthermore, the presence of sooty mold on the foliage interferes with photosynthesis, weakening the tree and making it more susceptible to other stressors.
Control measures. Effective management includes the following strategies:
- Regular monitoring of new shoot growth for early signs of psyllid presence.
- Biological control using specialized parasitic wasps such as Psyllaephagus pilosus.
- Application of systemic insecticides in nurseries where the pest pressure is exceptionally high.
- Maintaining optimal tree health through proper fertilization and watering to improve natural defenses.
