The eucalyptus psyllid (Ctenarytaina spatulata) is a tiny insect classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Psyllidae. This pest is highly specialized, feeding exclusively on various species of Eucalyptus, with a particular preference for the tender, succulent tissues of young, juvenile foliage.
This pest is primarily found on eucalyptus plants, causing significant damage to shoots and new leaves. It is a major concern in nurseries and young plantations, where the rapid growth of young foliage creates an optimal environment for the rapid colonization and population explosion of the insect.
The life cycle of Ctenarytaina spatulata consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The nymphs are the primary destructive phase, feeding on plant sap. During their development, they secrete large quantities of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for the growth of sooty mold, further stressing the host plant.
