Grey field slug
Deroceras
Description
Systematic position
The grey field slug (Deroceras) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Limacidae. These slugs are significant agricultural pests known for their high adaptability and voracious appetite, causing serious losses in gardens and commercial farms worldwide.
Biology and life cycle
Adults are typically 30–50 mm long, with a body coloration ranging from light grey to brown. Being hermaphroditic, they are highly efficient at reproduction, especially in cool and humid environments. Eggs are laid in clusters beneath soil clods, debris, or mulch, where they remain protected from extreme heat and dehydration until conditions become optimal for hatching.
Nature of damage
Deroceras species are nocturnal feeders, consuming leaves, seedlings, tubers, and fruits. They rasp plant tissue with their radula, creating large, irregular holes and leaving behind a slimy, mucus-based trail. This damage is most severe on tender plants like lettuce, brassicas, and seedling potatoes, often leading to total destruction of young crop stands.
Economic impact
The economic impact of slug infestation is significant, particularly during wet seasons. High populations can cause extensive yield losses, while the presence of mucus and fecal matter reduces the quality and marketability of the produce. Furthermore, feeding wounds serve as entry points for plant pathogens, increasing the risk of secondary rot infections.
Control measures
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective slug control:
- Maintaining good field sanitation by removing weeds and plant debris.
- Encouraging natural predators such as ground beetles, frogs, and hedgehogs.
- Implementing physical barriers like copper tape or sharp grit around sensitive plants.
- Using bait stations or professional-grade molluscicides (e.g., ferric phosphate) when threshold levels are reached.
- Improving field drainage to reduce the damp conditions favored by slugs.
