Systematic position: The Hungarian field slug (Deroceras sturanyi) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and the family Agriolimacidae. It is a small but highly destructive terrestrial gastropod that has spread across various agricultural landscapes due to its adaptability to moist, disturbed habitats.

Crop damage: This pest is a generalist herbivore. It poses a significant threat to a wide range of vegetable crops, including lettuce, cabbage, and spinach, as well as root crops like potatoes and carrots. Furthermore, it often causes damage to ornamental plants and seedlings, leading to substantial economic losses in commercial horticulture.

Biology and life cycle: The species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, meaning each individual can reproduce. Eggs are laid in clusters in damp soil or organic debris, typically hatching within a few weeks depending on temperature. The life cycle is largely dependent on soil moisture and ambient humidity, which dictate the slug’s activity periods and survival rate through seasonal cycles.

Nature of damage and pest impact: Slugs feed by rasping plant tissues with their radula, resulting in ragged holes or complete defoliation. On storage crops, such as potatoes, they dig deep pits that facilitate the entry of fungi and bacteria, rendering the produce unsellable. The presence of mucus trails is a primary indicator of their nocturnal feeding activity.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for control:

• Maintaining clean cultivation by removing weeds and plant debris that provide shelter.
• Implementing physical barriers like copper tape or abrasive materials around vulnerable beds.
