Invasive field slug

Deroceras invadens

Description

Deroceras invadens, commonly known as the invasive field slug, is a member of the Mollusca phylum, Gastropoda class, and Agriolimacidae family. This species has successfully invaded many temperate and subtropical regions globally, often outcompeting native slug species due to its high reproductive rate and extreme adaptability to agricultural environments.

The diet of this slug is remarkably broad, making it a major threat to a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. It frequently infests leafy vegetables, root crops, ornamental plants, and seedlings of field crops. The pest is particularly devastating in greenhouses and irrigated fields where high humidity levels favor its continuous feeding and activity.

Regarding its biology, Deroceras invadens is a hermaphrodite capable of producing several generations per year depending on the climate. They typically lay clusters of eggs in moist soil crevices or beneath organic debris. Their life cycle is highly dependent on humidity; they remain inactive during dry periods but emerge in large numbers during rainfall or high-humidity conditions to feed.

Slug damage is characterized by ragged holes in leaves and hollowed-out seeds or fruits. The presence of mucus trails is a diagnostic feature that helps identify an infestation. Beyond direct tissue consumption, these slugs significantly damage crop quality, rendering products unsalable and often introducing pathogens that lead to secondary rot in damaged plant tissues.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for controlling these slugs include:

  • Maintaining good sanitation by removing garden debris and weed cover.
  • Implementing physical barriers such as copper tape or abrasive mulch materials.
  • Utilizing biological control agents like predatory beetles or parasitic nematodes.
  • Applying granular slug baits containing ferric phosphate for environmentally safe control.
  • Optimizing irrigation to reduce excess moisture on the soil surface.
