Grey field slug
Deroceras reticulatum
Description
The grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum) is a member of the family Agriolimacidae and is widely recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests in temperate climates. These slugs are typically 40–60 mm long and possess a greyish-brown color with a distinct reticulated pattern. They are primarily nocturnal, seeking refuge in moist, cool microhabitats during the day.
As a highly polyphagous pest, the grey field slug feeds on a vast array of crops, including cereals, oilseed rape, potatoes, and various leafy vegetables. They are particularly dangerous during the seedling stage, as they can consume entire plants within a single night, leading to significant gaps in plant stands and reducing overall crop yields.
The biological cycle of the grey field slug is highly dependent on humidity and soil moisture. They are hermaphroditic and can lay hundreds of eggs in soil crevices or under decaying organic matter over their lifespan. Under optimal conditions, they produce multiple generations annually, with populations surging during cool, wet growing seasons that provide a moist environment for their development.
Damage caused by this pest is characterized by irregular, jagged holes in leaves and the complete destruction of succulent plant tissues. The presence of dried silvery mucous trails is a diagnostic indicator of their activity. Besides direct feeding, their presence facilitates the secondary infestation of crops by pathogenic fungi and bacteria, which can compromise both crop quality and storage shelf-life.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include:
- Tillage practices that expose eggs and juveniles to desiccation and predation.
- Managing irrigation systems to prevent unnecessary surface moisture.
- Using physical barriers such as copper tape or abrasive mulches to deter movement.
- Applying granular molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which provides effective control while minimizing impact on non-target species.
