Grey field slug

Systematic position: The grey field slug (Latin Deroceras laeve) belongs to the order Stylommatophora and the family Agriolimacidae. It is a small terrestrial gastropod mollusk known for its significant adaptability to various climatic conditions, making it a persistent pest in agricultural settings.

Affected crops: This species is a generalist feeder (polyphagous). It infests a wide range of horticultural and field crops, including lettuce, cabbage, potatoes, strawberries, and various ornamental plants. It is particularly destructive to seedlings and young succulent tissues in high-moisture environments like greenhouses.

Biology and life cycle: As hermaphrodites, grey field slugs can reproduce quickly under favorable moist conditions. They lay eggs in moist soil, beneath organic debris, or near the base of host plants. The life cycle is highly dependent on environmental moisture; in dry spells, they seek refuge in soil crevices or become inactive, emerging rapidly when humidity increases.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary damage involves irregular, ragged holes in leaves and the destruction of seedlings. On root crops, they create deep gouges that invite secondary infections like rot. Their mucus trails are a distinct sign of infestation and can also contribute to the spread of plant pathogens.
