Dolichodorus heterocephalus, commonly referred to as the awl nematode, belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Dolichodoridae. This microscopic organism is a specialized ectoparasite that thrives in moist, sandy soils, making it a significant challenge for growers in specific environmental conditions.
This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including essential agricultural crops. Notable targets include tomatoes, onions, celery, corn, and turf grasses. Its ability to survive in diverse soil types makes it a persistent threat in both commercial farming and landscape management.
The biology of the awl nematode centers on its specialized feeding mechanism. Using its exceptionally long stylet, the nematode penetrates the root tissue from the outside, feeding on the cytoplasm of root cells.
