Dolichotetranychus
Dolichotetranychus
Description
Systematic position. The genus Dolichotetranychus belongs to the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly known as false spider mites or flat mites. Unlike the common spider mites, these microscopic arthropods have a flattened body shape and do not produce webbing, which makes their early detection quite difficult.
Host plants. These mites are polyphagous and represent a significant threat to various ornamental plants, including orchids, palms, and yuccas. They are also known to infest agricultural crops, particularly in greenhouses and tropical climates, where they feed on the internal fluids of leaves and stems, weakening the plant host.
Biology and life cycle. The development cycle consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions with temperatures above +20°C, the entire cycle is completed in approximately 10 to 14 days. Females often deposit eggs within plant tissues, providing them with protection against many topical insecticides.
Damage and harmfulness. Mites feed by piercing the plant epidermis and injecting salivary enzymes that cause cellular damage. This results in stippling, chlorotic spotting, leaf deformation, and stunted growth. In severe infestations, Dolichotetranychus can cause premature leaf drop and the eventual death of the plant, significantly reducing both yield and ornamental value.
Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Quarantine measures for new plant introductions are essential to prevent the spread of the mite. Chemical control involves the application of systemic or translaminar acaricides. Rotating chemical classes is strictly recommended to manage the risk of resistance development.
- Regular inspection of the leaf undersides.
- Maintaining optimal humidity levels in growing facilities.
- Application of selective acaricides like abamectin or spirodiclofen.
- Removal and destruction of heavily infested plant materials.
