Pineapple false spider mite

Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly known as false spider mites or flat mites. Unlike the well-known spider mites (Tetranychidae), these organisms do not spin silk webs, which makes their presence less noticeable to growers during the early stages of infestation.

Host plants. The primary host for this mite is the pineapple (Ananas comosus). It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in tropical regions worldwide. The mites typically aggregate in the basal parts of leaves, specifically in the leaf axils, where they find protection and high humidity levels.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg, larva, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and the adult stage. The mites thrive under warm and humid conditions, which allow for rapid reproduction and population growth. Their development is closely linked to the microclimate inside the pineapple plant canopy.

Damage and economic impact. Feeding by these mites extracts cell sap, causing chlorosis and the development of necrotic spots on the leaves. Severe infestations lead to stunted plant growth, leaf deformation, and reduced marketability of the fruit. Furthermore, the feeding sites often act as entry points for various phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mite. Strategies include:

• Using clean, disinfected planting material for new plantations.
• Regular scouting of leaf bases to detect early populations.
• Applying specific acaricides registered for pineapple production.
• Implementing strict quarantine procedures when moving vegetative material between areas.
