Description

Systematic position. The cereal weevil (Eremnus cerealis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized agricultural pest that causes considerable damage to cereals, particularly in arid or semi-arid climatic conditions where environmental factors favor its population growth.

Crops affected. The pest primarily targets cereal crops, including winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In some agricultural settings, the beetle may also damage associated grass species, but its economic impact is most pronounced in wheat and barley fields during the early stages of plant development.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete life cycle comprising egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs mainly as adults within the soil profile. As spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to feed on developing plant tissues. Female weevils oviposit in the soil or near the crown of the host plants, where the subsequent larval stages develop.

Damage patterns and harmfulness. Adult weevils feed on the leaves of host plants, typically creating jagged or notched edges on the leaf blades. The subterranean larvae cause more severe damage by feeding on the root system and the base of the stems. This feeding activity disrupts nutrient uptake, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and potential loss of yield in severely infested field areas.

Protection measures. Effective control involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices, such as deep autumn plowing, are critical for disrupting the life cycle and reducing overwintering populations. Crop rotation is essential to prevent the buildup of pest numbers. In cases where populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of registered insecticides is recommended to protect the crop during the vulnerable growth stages.
