Description

The eucalyptus psyllid, classified within the genus Eucalyptolyma, belongs to the family Psyllidae (order Hemiptera). These insects are highly host-specific, primarily infesting various species of Eucalyptus. As specialized feeders, they have developed complex physiological adaptations that allow them to thrive on the foliage of their host trees.

The pest targets eucalyptus plantations, ornamental urban trees, and seedlings in nursery environments. By feeding on the phloem sap of young leaves and soft shoots, Eucalyptolyma induces significant physiological stress. This can stunt plant growth and, in severe cases, cause mortality in young or weakened saplings.

The biological cycle of Eucalyptolyma consists of eggs, nymphal stages, and adults. Female psyllids deposit eggs on the leaf surfaces, often in dense clusters. Upon hatching, nymphs begin to feed and produce honeydew, which serves as both a protective barrier and a medium for opportunistic microorganisms. The number of generations per year depends heavily on the prevailing regional climate.

Typical symptoms include distorted, chlorotic leaves, premature leaf senescence, and stunted tip growth. A major secondary impact is the development of sooty mold, which grows on the sugary honeydew excreted by the nymphs. This mold covers the leaf surface, physically blocking sunlight and severely impeding the tree's photosynthetic capability.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on both prevention and mitigation:

  • Field monitoring using yellow sticky traps to track population spikes.
  • Conservation biological control by encouraging native predators and parasitoids.
  • Pruning and removal of heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
  • Targeted application of systemic insecticides when necessary, focusing on the most susceptible life stages of the pest.
