Description

Gasterophilus haemorrhoidalis, commonly known as the nose bot fly, is a dipterous insect belonging to the Oestridae family. While not a plant pest, it is a significant veterinary concern that primarily affects equids (horses, donkeys, and mules), causing severe gastrointestinal myiasis known as gastrophilosis.

In terms of systematic position, this species is classified within the order Diptera and the family Gasterophilidae. The adult flies are non-feeding, but their larval stages are obligate parasites that live within the digestive tract of the host animal, completing a complex life cycle that spans several months.

The life cycle begins when the female fly deposits eggs on the lips and nose of the host. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the oral mucosa, causing irritation and inflammation. Subsequently, they migrate to the stomach and duodenum, where they attach themselves to the lining using specialized oral hooks, feeding on tissue fluids and mucus.

The pathogenicity of this parasite is characterized by chronic inflammation, localized hemorrhaging at the attachment sites, and general physical decline of the affected animal. Severe infestations can result in gastric rupture, chronic colic, nutritional deficiencies, and emaciation, significantly reducing the performance and health of livestock.

Control measures are essential for maintaining animal health and productivity. These include the strategic administration of anthelmintics (such as macrocyclic lactones) to eliminate larvae from the gastrointestinal tract, manual grooming to remove eggs from the coat, and pasture management to minimize exposure to adult flies during the egg-laying season.
