Glyptotermes xantholabrum

Glyptotermes xantholabrum is a species of termite belonging to the family Kalotermitidae, commonly known as drywood termites. Unlike subterranean termites, these insects do not require ground contact to survive, allowing them to establish entire colonies within the structural tissue of wood, making them a significant pest in tropical and subtropical agriculture.

This termite species primarily infests various tree crops, including cocoa, fruit trees, and other woody perennial plants. By colonizing the inner tissues of the stem or branches, they compromise the structural integrity of the plant, often leading to reduced vigor and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the affected tree.

The biology of Glyptotermes xantholabrum revolves around a caste-based society including reproductives, soldiers, and pseudergates (false workers). They rely on symbiotic flagellates within their gut to digest the cellulose contained in the wood. Development is slow, and colonies can persist for years within a single host tree without external signs of infestation.

The damage is characterized by intricate tunnels and galleries excavated throughout the xylem. The most visible indicator of an infestation is the presence of frass — dry, granular fecal pellets expelled from the colony's galleries through small openings in the bark. This internal excavation significantly weakens the host plant, often causing it to become susceptible to breakage and environmental stress.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies: inspecting plantations for signs of wood debris (frass) and small exit holes. Infected plant parts should be pruned and destroyed immediately to prevent colony expansion. Chemical control involves the targeted application of systemic or contact insecticides, while preventative measures focus on maintaining plant health and removing deadwood that could serve as a nesting site for new colonies.
