Goeldichironomus midge

Goeldichironomus carus is a species of non-biting midge belonging to the family Chironomidae (order Diptera). In agricultural settings, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, it is recognized as a specific pest that targets rice cultivation during the germination and seedling establishment phases.

This pest is primarily associated with paddy rice fields where standing water provides an ideal environment for its lifecycle. The larvae cause significant economic damage by feeding on germinating seeds and the delicate root systems of young rice plants, leading to poor stand establishment and reduced overall productivity.

The biology of this species is tied to aquatic habitats. Adult midges do not feed on crops, but their reproductive cycle involves laying eggs directly into the water. Upon hatching, the larvae construct small tubes in the sediment and emerge to graze on the succulent parts of young rice seedlings, often causing widespread destruction in flooded fields.

Damage symptoms include the destruction of the radicle and coleoptile, resulting in stunted growth or the complete death of the seedling. Because the feeding occurs beneath the water surface, the infestation is often difficult to detect until substantial damage to the plant population has already occurred.

Management strategies require an integrated approach to maintain crop health:

• water management, specifically strategic drainage of fields;
• seed treatment with recommended insecticides prior to planting;
• monitoring of larval population densities;
• biological control through the preservation of aquatic insect predators.
