Description
The genus Hypoderma, part of the Oestridae family (Diptera), comprises parasitic insects commonly referred to as cattle grubs or warble flies. These organisms are significant pests that affect bovine populations, causing major health issues and economic losses for the livestock industry worldwide.
The biology of the pest is defined by a complex life cycle. Adult flies lay eggs on the hair of cattle, after which the larvae hatch and penetrate the skin. They migrate through the host's connective tissues and internal organs, eventually settling in the subcutaneous tissue along the animal's back to complete their development.
The damage caused by these larvae is substantial. As they develop under the skin, they create breathing holes (warbles) which damage the hide, reducing its commercial value. Furthermore, the larval migration and feeding activity cause severe local inflammation, pain, and secondary bacterial infections in the host.
Parasitism by Hypoderma also impacts the host's physiological state. Infected animals suffer from chronic stress, reduced weight gain, and diminished milk production. In severe cases, the migration of larvae can lead to neurological issues or paralysis if they reach the spinal canal, posing a life-threatening risk to the livestock.
Effective management and protection require a structured approach:
- Systemic insecticide treatments applied during the late summer or autumn to kill larvae before they migrate to the back.
- Use of pour-on or injectable formulations recommended by veterinary authorities.
- Monitoring the herd for signs of warble nodules in the early spring.
- Implementation of biosecurity measures and grazing management to minimize exposure to adult fly populations.
