Systematic position: Hypoderma actaeon is a species of the Oestridae family (bot flies) within the order Diptera. This fly is an obligate parasite known primarily for its impact on deer populations, causing a debilitating condition known as hypodermosis.

Hosts and affected sectors: The primary hosts for this parasite are red deer and other cervids. In commercial deer farming, this pest is economically devastating, as it directly damages the quality of hides and the health of the animals, leading to significant financial losses in the venison and antler production sectors.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Hypoderma actaeon involves a complex migration process. Adult flies deposit eggs on the host's hair. Upon hatching, larvae penetrate the skin and migrate through the subcutaneous tissue to the dorsal region. Here, they create cysts, where they develop while feeding on host fluids before emerging to pupate in the soil.

Damage and pest status: The damage is characterized by the presence of breathing holes in the skin, which destroy the integrity of the hide. Furthermore, the constant irritation and parasitic toxicity cause significant distress to the animal, resulting in weight loss, poor coat condition, and secondary bacterial infections at the site of the larvae's exit points.
