Description

Systematic position: Hypoderma bovis belongs to the order Diptera and the family Oestridae. Contrary to the classification as a plant pest, it is a significant obligate parasite of cattle, causing severe health issues in livestock rather than damaging agricultural crops or vegetation.

Biology and life cycle: The adult flies emerge in the summer, laying eggs on the hair of cattle. Once hatched, the larvae penetrate the skin and begin a long migration through the animal's tissues, moving through the connective tissues and the esophagus before settling under the skin of the back to develop into final larval stages.

Damage and harmfulness: The presence of larvae leads to a condition known as hypodermiasis. Infected animals suffer from painful swellings (warbles), which cause considerable stress, reduced milk production, stunted growth, and skin damage.
