Beet stem weevil

Hypolixus truncatulus

Description

Taxonomic position: The beet stem weevil Hypolixus truncatulus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with the Chenopodiaceae family, commonly found in commercial sugar beet and fodder beet production regions.

Host crops: This weevil is highly host-specific. The main economic impact is seen on sugar beet, fodder beet, and red beet. Additionally, wild plant species within the Amaranthaceae family often serve as reservoirs for the pest, allowing it to maintain population levels between cultivation cycles of the primary host crop.

Biology and life cycle: Adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under debris. In the spring, they emerge and migrate to young beet plants. Females lay eggs inside the stems or petioles by creating small punctures. Larvae hatch and begin tunneling into the plant tissue, where they complete their development and eventually pupate within the stem or stalk.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: Adult beetles cause minor damage by feeding on leaf margins. The significant economic damage is caused by the larvae, which hollow out the interior of stems and petioles. This disrupts nutrient transport, weakens the plant's structural integrity, and results in stunted root development and reduced sugar content. In severe infestations, stems become brittle and break, leading to total yield loss of the affected plants.

  • Implementation of a strict crop rotation program to reduce pest buildup.
  • Effective control of Amaranthaceae weeds (e.g., Chenopodium species) near fields.
  • Deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering sites of adult weevils.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of adults.
  • Prompt harvest and deep incorporation of crop residues into the soil.
