Taxonomic position: The beet stem weevil Hypolixus truncatulus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized pest primarily associated with the Chenopodiaceae family, commonly found in commercial sugar beet and fodder beet production regions.
Host crops: This weevil is highly host-specific. The main economic impact is seen on sugar beet, fodder beet, and red beet. Additionally, wild plant species within the Amaranthaceae family often serve as reservoirs for the pest, allowing it to maintain population levels between cultivation cycles of the primary host crop.
Biology and life cycle: Adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under debris. In the spring, they emerge and migrate to young beet plants. Females lay eggs inside the stems or petioles by creating small punctures.
