Description
Incisitermes is a genus of drywood termites belonging to the family Kalotermitidae. Unlike subterranean termites, these insects do not require contact with the soil to survive, allowing them to establish permanent colonies within the heartwood of various host trees and structural timbers.
In an agricultural and arboricultural context, Incisitermes species pose a significant threat to fruit orchards and ornamental plantations. They primarily target mature or weakened trees, infiltrating through bark crevices or pruning wounds, where they gradually excavate galleries throughout the wood to feed on cellulose.
The biology of these pests is characterized by a closed life cycle. The entire colony resides within a self-contained system of tunnels in the tree. Because they do not forage in the open, infestations remain concealed for years, often until structural damage to the tree becomes visually apparent through weakened branches or canopy thinning.
Damage assessment usually begins with the identification of frass—distinctive, six-sided fecal pellets that the termites push out of small holes in the wood. This damage manifests as internal decay, which compromises the tree's vascular system, reduces its overall vigor, and makes it highly susceptible to breaking under stress or environmental load.
Management and protection strategies require diligence and specialized techniques to effectively reach the hidden colonies:
- Systematic monitoring of tree trunks and major limbs for exit holes and frass.
- Sanitary pruning of heavily infested branches to reduce colony size.
- Direct injection of specialized insecticides into the termite galleries to reach deep-seated populations.
- Use of protective sealants on all pruning wounds to block potential entry points.
- Maintaining optimal tree health through proper irrigation and nutrition to increase resistance to pest colonization.
