Incisitermes snyderi is a species of drywood termite belonging to the family Kalotermitidae. Unlike subterranean termites, this pest does not require contact with the soil to survive, as it derives moisture directly from the wood it consumes, allowing it to establish colonies within structures above ground level.
The host range of Incisitermes snyderi includes a wide variety of hardwood and softwood species. They are known to infest structural timber, furniture, utility poles, and ornamental trees. By tunneling through wood, they compromise the integrity of wooden components, which can lead to significant economic losses in residential and agricultural settings.
The biology of these termites is characterized by a cryptic lifestyle. A colony consists of a king, a queen, and several developmental stages, including pseudergates (false workers). Since they spend their entire life cycle inside the wood, they can remain undetected for years, gradually expanding their galleries until structural failure occurs.
Damage assessment typically involves looking for signs such as frass, which are small, fecal pellets that appear as fine sawdust or sand. These pellets are expelled through small "kick-out" holes. Internally, the wood becomes honeycombed with interconnected galleries that follow the grain, leaving the outer surface of the wood looking perfectly intact.
Management and control strategies focus on prevention and targeted elimination. Key approaches include:
- inspecting incoming lumber for signs of infestation;
- applying borate-based wood preservatives;
- utilizing structural fumigation for localized or whole-building infestations;
- installing physical barriers to prevent entry;
