Systematic position: The smaller eight-toothed spruce bark beetle (Ips amitinus) is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a significant secondary pest, though it has increasingly become a primary driver of forest decline in mountainous and boreal regions of Europe.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this species are Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). While it typically targets weakened, storm-felled, or drought-stressed trees, sustained population growth under favorable climatic conditions allows it to colonize healthy, mature stands with high mortality rates.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is typical for the genus, consisting of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs mainly as adults in the leaf litter or thick bark. Spring activity begins once temperatures rise sufficiently. Females excavate galleries in the phloem where they deposit eggs, and the developing larvae create individual feeding galleries that extend perpendicular to the maternal gallery.

Damage patterns and economic impact: The damage is primarily caused by the tunneling activity of both adults and larvae, which girdles the tree and interrupts the transport of water and photosynthates. Visual indicators of an active infestation include the accumulation of frass (bore dust) at the tree base and at the bark fissures. Early intervention is critical, as infested trees can die within a single season.
