Kalotermes dispar

Kalotermes dispar

Description

Kalotermes dispar is a species of termite belonging to the order Blattodea and the family Kalotermitidae. These insects are known as drywood termites, meaning they live entirely within the wood they consume and do not require contact with soil to survive. Their cryptic nature makes them challenging to detect until significant structural damage has already occurred.

This pest primarily attacks weakened, decaying, or dead wood of various tree species. In horticultural settings, they can cause damage to orchard trees, grapevines, and ornamental woody plants. Because they can thrive in relatively dry environments, they are capable of surviving inside furniture, structural timber, and live trees that have necrotic zones.

The life cycle consists of eggs, nymphs, and adults, which live in colonies within the galleries they carve into the wood. Unlike subterranean termites, they do not create mud tubes. The colony growth is slow, and the termites utilize symbiotic protozoa in their digestive tracts to efficiently break down the cellulose fibers found in wood tissue.

The damage caused by Kalotermes dispar manifests as deep, irregular galleries that weaken the structural integrity of the wood. Externally, the primary indicator of an infestation is the presence of frass — tiny, six-sided fecal pellets ejected from the tunnels. Left untreated, the internal erosion of the stem or branches can lead to tree failure or significant loss of productivity.

Effective management strategies focus on prevention and integrated pest control. Key steps include removing dead wood from orchards, pruning infested branches immediately, and ensuring trees are healthy to resist infestation. If an infestation is confirmed, targeted application of borate-based wood preservatives or systemic insecticides may be necessary to eradicate the colony within the wood.
