Drywood termite

Kalotermes marginipennis

Description

The drywood termite (Kalotermes marginipennis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Blattodea and the family Kalotermitidae. Unlike subterranean termites, this species does not require soil contact, allowing it to thrive entirely within dry, sound wood. This unique biological trait makes them highly adaptable to various environments, including living trees and structural timber.

These termites infest a wide variety of hardwoods and softwoods, frequently targeting ornamental plants, fruit trees, and forest timber. They are particularly attracted to trees that are stressed, injured, or have heartwood exposure. In an agricultural context, they compromise the vitality of orchard trees and cause significant losses in high-value wood production by compromising the structural integrity of the trunks.

The life cycle of Kalotermes marginipennis is centered around the colony. The caste system consists of kings, queens, nymphs (which serve as workers), and soldiers. The colonization process begins with winged reproductive forms leaving existing colonies to mate and establish new nests deep within the woody tissue. Once established, the colony grows gradually, maintaining its internal galleries for several years without needing to venture outside.

The damage caused by these insects is insidious and often goes undetected until significant structural failure occurs. They excavate extensive galleries throughout the wood, which disrupts nutrient transport and weakens the tree's resistance to environmental stress and pathogens. Visible signs often include small circular exit holes and piles of frass, which are small, granular fecal pellets expelled by the termites.

Management and protection strategies include:

  • Regular inspection of bark and stem surfaces for signs of termite activity or entrance holes.
  • Sanitary pruning and removal of heavily infested branches or entire trees to prevent colony spread.
  • Application of specialized chemical treatments or insecticidal injections to protect individual trees of high economic or aesthetic value.
  • Promoting overall tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation to improve natural defense mechanisms.
