Desert drywood termite

The desert drywood termite (Kalotermes simplicicornis) is a member of the order Blattodea and the family Kalotermitidae. Unlike many other termite species that require constant moisture from the soil, this species is uniquely adapted to thrive in arid environments by nesting directly inside dry woody plant tissues.

It acts as a significant pest for various agricultural crops, particularly citrus trees, grapevines, and ornamental plants. By targeting the root crowns and the stems near the soil line, these termites cause physiological damage that often goes unnoticed until the plant begins to decline significantly or collapses.

The biology of Kalotermes simplicicornis is defined by its ability to live entirely within wood. The colony structure includes kings, queens, and nymphs that work slowly to hollow out the interior of the host plant. They do not require soil tunnels, making them harder to detect compared to subterranean termites that build mud tubes.

Damage caused by this insect involves the excavation of internal galleries, which weakens the structural integrity of the plant. This damage leads to disrupted nutrient transport, reduced fruit yields, and premature plant death. Evidence of their presence often includes small piles of granular frass expelled from tiny holes in the plant stem or roots.

Management strategies focus on prevention and targeted chemical intervention. Effective approaches include:

• Regular field scouting for signs of frass at the base of trees.
• Soil drenching with authorized insecticides in localized outbreaks.
• Sanitation, which involves the removal and destruction of infested plant material.
• Using preventative treatments on young plantings in high-risk arid regions.

Given the hidden nature of their activity, monitoring is crucial. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the maintenance of healthy, well-irrigated plants, can help reduce the susceptibility of trees to successful colonization by these termites.
