Description

The Ligyrus beetle (Ligyrus relictus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. As part of the Dynastinae subfamily, these beetles are widely recognized for their larvae, known as grubs, which develop within the soil and feed on underground organic matter and living plant tissues.

This pest affects a variety of agricultural crops, including cereals, sugar beets, potatoes, and various vegetable crops. The damage is primarily caused by the larval stages, which reside in the soil profile, often going unnoticed by farmers until visible wilting or crop failure occurs in the field.

The biology of Ligyrus relictus revolves around soil moisture and the presence of organic debris. The life cycle consists of the egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult beetle. Adults are nocturnal, showing high activity during the night and are attracted to light sources, which helps in monitoring their presence in an area.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of root systems and the tunneling of underground stems. Affected plants exhibit yellowing and stunted growth, eventually collapsing due to the inability of the damaged root system to provide water and nutrients. In high-density infestations, entire patches of crops may be destroyed, necessitating immediate intervention.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as deep autumn plowing effectively expose larvae to predators and freezing temperatures. Additionally, applying soil insecticides during sowing or using seed treatments provides a protective barrier for emerging seedlings, significantly reducing the impact of the pest on overall yield.
