Long weevil

Systematic position: The Long weevil (lat. Lixus elongatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae. It is a specialized phytophagous insect that primarily targets plants within the Brassicaceae family, making it a potential threat in agricultural landscapes where these crops are cultivated.

Target crops: This pest is known for damaging various members of the mustard family (Brassicaceae). It frequently infests cultivated crops like rapeseed, mustard, and canola. Furthermore, it thrives on wild cruciferous plants, such as wild radish and field pennycress, which act as primary host reservoirs during the early stages of the season.

Biology and life cycle: Adult weevils overwinter in the upper soil layers or beneath plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on the foliage of host plants. Females deposit their eggs directly into the plant tissues, typically in stems or leaf petioles. The emerging larvae tunnel into the plant, living and feeding internally until they reach the pupation stage.

Damage and pest impact: The primary economic impact is caused by the larval feeding habit. As they bore through the stems, they disrupt the vascular system, which hinders nutrient transport and results in weakened, stunted, or wilted plants. Adult beetles contribute to the damage by feeding on leaves, creating small, irregular holes that can affect the overall vigor of the crop if the population density is high.
