Description
Systematic position: The beet stem weevil, Lixus impressiventris, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a specific pest that targets crops within the Chenopodiaceae family, presenting a constant challenge for sugar beet and fodder beet growers in certain regions.
Crops and damage: The primary host plants are various species of beets. Both the adults and larvae contribute to crop damage. Adults feed on the foliage, creating small punctures, while the larvae feed inside the petioles and stems, which disrupts the plant’s vascular system and impedes the transport of nutrients to the root system.
Biology and life cycle: Adults hibernate in the soil or under debris during the winter. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge and migrate to host plants. Females lay eggs inside the plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae mine the stems, completing their development internally before pupating, which often leaves the plant weakened and vulnerable.
