Systematic position: The beet stem weevil (Lixus rubicundus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specific pest adapted to feed on plants within the Amaranthaceae family, particularly targeting cultivated beets.

Host crops: This weevil primarily infests sugar, fodder, and table beets. It also utilizes wild host plants, such as lambsquarters and various saltbushes, to sustain its population outside of the main cropping season.

Biology and life cycle: The adults hibernate in the soil or under debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on leaves. The female weevil inserts eggs into the leaf stalks or stems.
