Beet stem weevil

Lixus subtilis

Description

The beet stem weevil (Lixus subtilis) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is primarily known for its harmful impact on sugar beet, fodder beet, and table beet crops, often causing noticeable losses in fields where cultural practices are not strictly followed.

The life cycle of this beetle involves complete metamorphosis. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in the spring to feed on young beet foliage. After mating, females deposit their eggs directly into the leaf stalks or stems of the host plants. The larvae hatch inside the plant tissue and remain there for the duration of their development, feeding on internal cellular structures.

The damage caused by the beet stem weevil is twofold. Adult beetles cause superficial damage by feeding on leaves, creating small holes or notches. The primary damage, however, is caused by the larvae. By boring tunnels inside the petioles and stems, they disrupt the vascular system of the beet plant, impeding the flow of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to stunted growth and reduced root yield.

In terms of population dynamics, the intensity of infestations often fluctuates based on seasonal weather conditions. Hot and dry summers tend to favor the development of the weevil, while proper crop rotation and the removal of host weeds effectively suppress their numbers within the agricultural landscape.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for managing this pest. Control strategies focus on mechanical and chemical methods to minimize damage. Key practices include deep autumn plowing to bury the overwintering adults, maintaining proper distances between subsequent crop seasons to break the pest cycle, and applying registered systemic insecticides when larval infestation thresholds are exceeded.
