Longidorus

Longidorus (Longidorus) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Dorylaimida, and family Longidoridae. These are among the largest plant-parasitic nematodes, with body lengths reaching up to 10–12 mm, making them visible to the naked eye. They primarily function as ectoparasites, inhabiting the rhizosphere of various plant species.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, sugar beets, potatoes, strawberries, fruit trees, and vineyards. Longidorus poses a significant threat to young seedlings in nurseries, where their feeding activities can lead to large-scale plant losses and a substantial decline in the commercial value of the produced nursery stock.

The biology and life cycle of Longidorus are characterized by slow development, which is highly dependent on soil temperature and moisture levels. Females deposit eggs directly into the soil, from which larvae emerge and undergo several developmental stages to reach adulthood. The entire life cycle takes considerable time, and the population can persist in the soil for years, surviving unfavorable conditions through migration toward new root systems.

The primary damage occurs at root tips, where nematodes feed using a long, needle-like stylet. Feeding sites often develop characteristic galls or swellings, leading to root deformation and stunted growth. The plant suffers from severe water and nutrient stress, which manifests as stunted development, leaf chlorosis, and general decline. Furthermore, these nematodes act as efficient vectors for several plant viruses.

Management strategies require a comprehensive approach, including the use of certified healthy planting material, strict crop rotation with non-host species, and effective weed control. In intensive agriculture, practices such as soil fumigation before planting sensitive crops, the application of specialized nematicides, and the use of biological control agents like predatory fungi or soil-borne microorganisms are employed to suppress nematode populations.
