Longidorus apulus

Longidorus apulus is a species of dorylaimid nematode belonging to the family Longidoridae. These microscopic organisms are notorious ectoparasites of plants. They are equipped with an exceptionally long odontostyle, which they use to penetrate the root tissues of host plants from the outside, feeding on the cytoplasm of the cells located in the root tips.

The host range for this nematode is quite extensive. It is known to cause significant damage to commercial crops such as grapevines, sugar beets, tomatoes, and various cereal grains. The nematode is primarily found in the soil, where its distribution is heavily influenced by soil texture, moisture levels, and the availability of suitable host roots in the root zone.

The biological cycle of Longidorus apulus is relatively slow, which is characteristic of the Longidoridae family. The nematode undergoes several molts before reaching maturity. Since they are ectoparasitic, they do not enter the root tissue but remain in the soil surrounding the root zone. Their population dynamics are significantly affected by the soil temperature and the irrigation regime applied to the field.

Damage to crops is manifested as root galling, stunting, and the formation of swollen tips on the root system. These physiological disturbances prevent the plant from absorbing water and essential nutrients effectively, leading to visible symptoms above ground such as chlorosis, wilting, and stunted growth.
