Longidorus africanus

Longidorus africanus is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Longidoridae and the order Dorylaimida. Commonly known as a needle nematode, this organism is characterized by an elongated body and an extremely long odontostyle. It acts as an ectoparasite, feeding on the meristematic tissues of plant root tips from the outside of the root system.

This pest affects a wide range of economically important crops, including sugar beets, cotton, carrots, lettuce, and various vegetable crops grown in greenhouses or open fields. It prefers sandy or sandy-loam soils, which allow for easier movement and survival of the nematodes. Infestations often occur in patches within a field, leading to uneven crop growth and reduced vigor.

The life cycle of Longidorus africanus consists of an egg stage, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The transition between these stages is climate-dependent, with warmer soil temperatures generally accelerating development. These nematodes can survive for long periods in the soil, even in the absence of a primary host, by remaining inactive in deeper soil layers.

The primary damage caused by this nematode involves the stunting of root growth and the formation of characteristic terminal galls or swellings on the root tips. Because the root system is damaged, the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients is severely impaired. In many cases, infected plants appear stunted, chlorotic, and may wilt under stress, causing significant yield losses.
