Longidorus asiaticus is a destructive soil-borne nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. These microscopic organisms are known as ectoparasites because they remain outside the root tissue, using an elongated, needle-like stylet to feed on the root tips of various host plants.
The host range of this nematode is quite extensive, affecting horticultural crops, fruit orchards, and ornamental plants. It thrives particularly well in light, sandy, or porous soils, which allow the nematodes to migrate easily towards the root zones where they can access nutrients.
The biology of Longidorus asiaticus is closely tied to soil conditions, including moisture levels and temperature. The lifecycle involves multiple molting stages where both juveniles and adults act as active feeders. During winter or periods of drought, the nematode may descend into deeper soil layers to survive.
Damage to the plant is primarily caused by feeding at the root apex, which results in characteristic root stunting and the formation of small galls or swollen tips. The inability of the root system to absorb water and essential nutrients effectively leads to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield.
Control strategies for this nematode must be integrated and preventative. Key measures include:

- Using certified, nematode-free nursery stock;
- Applying soil fumigants or biological nematicides in infested areas;
