Longidorus attenuatus

Longidorus attenuatus is a migratory ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the family Longidoridae. This microscopic pest is widely recognized in agriculture not only for the direct damage it inflicts on plant root systems but also for its critical role as a vector for various soil-borne plant viruses, such as the Raspberry ringspot virus.

The host range of this nematode is quite extensive, including various agricultural and horticultural crops. Sugar beet, potatoes, strawberries, cereals, and several perennial woody species are highly susceptible to its feeding activity. It is most commonly found in sandy or light-textured soils, where its ability to migrate between host roots is facilitated.

The biological cycle of this species is characterized by relatively slow development and a high dependence on host availability. The nematode uses its long stylet to penetrate the root tissue, feeding on cortical cells. This process occurs through several molts, requiring continuous access to nutrient-rich plant tissues to complete the life cycle successfully.

The damage caused by Longidorus attenuatus is manifested as root tip necrosis, stunted growth, and the development of thickened, swollen root systems. Plants affected by the virus transmitted by this nematode often show symptoms of chlorosis, mosaic patterns, and reduced vigor, which directly translate into significant yield losses and poor quality of produce.

Management of this pest requires an integrated approach to reduce population levels in the soil.
