Longidorus elongatus

Systematic position. Longidorus elongatus belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Dorylaimida, and family Longidoridae. Commonly referred to as needle nematodes, they are ectoparasites that inhabit the soil profile, feeding on plant roots using an elongated, needle-like stylet to penetrate root tissues.

Host plants and damage. The species has a remarkably broad host range, affecting strawberries, raspberries, carrots, potatoes, and various ornamental plants. The primary damage is caused by the nematode feeding on the root tips, which leads to the formation of galls, stunted root systems, and secondary rot. These symptoms cause poor plant development, chlorosis, and significantly reduced crop yield.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of an egg stage and four juvenile stages before reaching adulthood. Longidorus elongatus is characterized by a slow reproductive rate compared to other nematodes but has a long lifespan. They remain active in moist soil conditions and can survive for extended periods without a host, making them persistent soil-borne pests.

Viral transmission. A critical aspect of their impact is the ability to transmit plant viruses, specifically Nepoviruses such as Raspberry ringspot virus and Tomato black ring virus. The nematode acquires the virus through feeding and can retain it for several weeks or months. Because of this, even small populations of these nematodes can cause catastrophic viral outbreaks in sensitive crops.

Control measures. Management is complex because the nematodes can reside deep in the soil profile. Integrated pest management strategies are essential, focusing on:

• Rigorous soil testing before planting to determine population density.
• Use of nematode-free certified nursery stock.
• Implementation of crop rotation using non-host or antagonistic cover crops.
• Soil fumigation or the application of specialized nematicides in high-risk zones.
• Strict weed control to eliminate alternative hosts for both the nematodes and the viruses they transmit.
