Longidorus laevicapitatus

Longidorus laevicapitatus

Description

Longidorus laevicapitatus is a significant soil-borne plant parasitic nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. These nematodes are ectoparasitic organisms that live in the soil and feed on the roots of plants using their elongated, needle-like feeding organ known as an odontostyle.

This pest has a diverse host range, infesting a wide variety of crops including cereals, various vegetable species, and fruit crops. Because it remains in the rhizosphere and feeds on the growing tips of roots, it can cause severe stress to the plant throughout the entire growing season, significantly reducing the efficiency of nutrient and water uptake.

The biology of Longidorus laevicapitatus is characterized by a multi-stage life cycle, involving eggs and several juvenile stages. The nematodes thrive in specific soil moisture and temperature conditions, often migrating deeper into the soil profile to avoid extreme temperatures. Their reproduction rate is relatively low, but their ability to survive in the absence of a host for some time makes them persistent field pests.

Damage symptoms are primarily observed at the root level, including the development of galls, stunted root growth, and proliferation of secondary roots. As a result of this damage, above-ground symptoms such as chlorosis, stunted growth, and uneven maturation become apparent. In severe infestations, the yield reduction is substantial, and the plants become highly susceptible to environmental stressors.

Management strategies for controlling this nematode include:

  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host species to break the life cycle.
  • Strict sanitation protocols to prevent the movement of infested soil between fields.
  • Regular soil sampling and nematode analysis to determine population densities.
  • Applying chemical nematicides or biological control agents when thresholds are exceeded.
  • Maintaining soil health through the addition of organic matter to support natural antagonists.
