Systematic position: Longidorus piceicola is a member of the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. These are microscopic, free-living soil nematodes categorized as ectoparasites that inhabit the rhizosphere, maintaining a cryptic lifestyle around plant roots.
Host plants: This species is primarily associated with woody and coniferous species, particularly Norway spruce (Picea abies). It can also impact the root systems of various herbaceous plants and agricultural crops grown in forest nurseries or on land previously used for forestry.
Biology and life cycle: The nematodes possess an elongated, thread-like body and a specialized feeding organ called an odontostyle, which they use to puncture plant root cells. The life cycle consists of an egg stage followed by four larval stages, each separated by a molt. Development is typically slow, and population density is heavily dependent on soil moisture levels and the availability of suitable host plants.
Character of damage: Feeding by the nematode causes the formation of galls and deformities at the root tips. Affected roots lose their efficiency in absorbing water and nutrients, resulting in stunted plant growth, chlorosis of needles or leaves, and overall weakness of the seedlings.
