Systematic position: Longidorus pisi is a significant soil-borne plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. Commonly referred to as a type of needle nematode, it is characterized by its exceptionally long odontostyle, which it uses to penetrate plant root tissues.

Host range: This species is a polyphagous pest with a broad host range. It is particularly damaging to legumes, with peas being the primary target, hence its name. However, it also attacks a wide variety of economic crops including sugar beets, potatoes, and various vegetable species, often causing widespread field damage.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Longidorus pisi consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. As an ectoparasite, it remains outside the root system but feeds on the root tips. Reproduction and development rates are highly dependent on soil temperature and moisture conditions, allowing it to persist in the field throughout the growing season.

Damage and pathogenicity: The primary injury is caused by the mechanical disruption of root cells during feeding, which results in stunted, swollen, or hooked root tips. Beyond direct physical damage, the nematode is a recognized vector for several plant viruses, which often leads to more severe symptoms of mosaic, chlorosis, and stunted growth in affected crops.

Management strategies: Controlling Longidorus pisi requires an integrated pest management approach. Since the nematode lives deep in the soil profile, chemical control is often expensive and technically challenging. Current strategies focus on:
