Longidorus vineacola

Longidorus vineacola is a dangerous soil-borne plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. These ectoparasitic nematodes are among the most significant microscopic worms inhabiting the rhizosphere of plants. Their activity causes severe damage to both perennial plantations and various vegetable crops.

The host range of this pest is quite broad. Primarily, it affects grapevines, as reflected in the species name. Additionally, the nematode attacks fruit trees, berry bushes, and numerous vegetables, including potatoes and tomatoes. Its damage is manifested through the weakening of the plant's immune system and by facilitating the entry of secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

The biology of Longidorus vineacola is characterized by a prolonged developmental cycle. These nematodes live in deeper soil layers, migrating in search of roots. The reproduction process and larval development are highly dependent on soil temperature and moisture. Throughout their life cycle, these pests undergo several molts, requiring constant feeding on root sap to progress to the next developmental stage.

The damage caused typically involves the formation of pathological galls on the tips of root hairs. Due to the injection of the nematode's salivary secretion during feeding, the root tip becomes deformed, ceases growth, and begins to branch. This leads to overall plant suppression, reduced yields, and the premature death of young seedlings in cases of heavy soil infestation.

Control measures include the following practices:

• Implementation of thermal or chemical soil disinfection prior to establishing vineyards.
• Cultivation of antagonistic cover crops, such as mustard or oilseed radish, to reduce nematode populations.
