Hubbard's drywood termite

Marginitermes hubbardi is a species of termite belonging to the family Kalotermitidae. Unlike subterranean termites, this species does not require contact with the soil to survive, allowing it to colonize dry wood in both standing trees and structural timber effectively.

This pest frequently attacks various deciduous trees, including sycamores, poplars, cottonwoods, and diverse orchard trees. They bore into the wood through bark fissures or previous injury sites, creating extensive galleries inside the heartwood, which significantly compromises the structural stability of the plant.

The biology of Marginitermes hubbardi revolves around a highly organized colony structure. The life cycle progresses through egg and nymph stages, eventually differentiating into workers, soldiers, or alates. Alates are responsible for the dispersal phase, emerging during swarming events to establish new colonies in suitable dry wood environments.

The primary symptom of an infestation is the presence of frass, which consists of small, hard, fecal pellets pushed out of tiny holes in the wood or bark. Because these insects live entirely inside the timber, external visual symptoms may appear minimal until substantial internal damage has already occurred, leading to branch failure.
