Squash vine borer

The squash vine borer (Melittia pulchripes) is a destructive agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These moths are characterized by their clear-winged appearance and mimicry of wasps, which helps them evade predators, while their larval stage causes significant economic losses in cucurbit production worldwide.

This pest specifically targets plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. Primary hosts include squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, melons, and gourds. The larvae bore into the stems of these plants, consuming the internal tissue and disrupting the transport of nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to the wilting and death of the entire vine or the plant itself.

The biological cycle consists of a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female moths deposit their eggs on the stems or base of the plant. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into the vine, where they live and feed for several weeks. When mature, they exit the stem and burrow into the soil to pupate and overwinter, completing their development cycle.

The severity of damage caused by the larvae includes structural weakening of the vine, restricted growth, and plant collapse. Growers can identify an infestation by observing wilting leaves, especially in the morning, along with the presence of frass (larval waste resembling sawdust) extruded from small holes at the base of the stems, often near the ground level.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for controlling Melittia pulchripes are essential for successful cultivation:

• Implementing crop rotation to minimize the build-up of pupae in the soil.
• Removing and destroying infested plant material immediately after symptoms are spotted.
• Utilizing physical barriers or row covers early in the season to prevent egg-laying.
• Applying targeted insecticides during the peak flight period of adult moths.
• Tilling the soil in the autumn to expose and destroy overwintering pupae.
