Systematic position. The nematode Merlinius nanus belongs to the order Tylenchida, family Telotylenchidae. This microscopic phytohelminth is an obligate ectoparasite of the root systems of various agricultural and wild plants. The species is widely distributed across different soil types and climatic zones.

Host plants. This pest is characterized by its wide polyphagy. Merlinius nanus causes significant economic losses to cereal crops, potatoes, sugar beets, and various vegetables. The parasite is also frequently found in the rhizosphere of perennial grasses and fruit trees, where it can persist for long periods.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this nematode takes place primarily in the soil, specifically in the root zone of host plants. Merlinius nanus exhibits high adaptability to fluctuations in soil moisture and temperature. Reproduction occurs sexually, and larvae undergo several developmental stages before reaching maturity, continuously feeding on the cell contents of roots.
