Systematic position: Fig scale (Microparlatoria fici) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. This scale insect is recognized as a specific pest primarily affecting plants within the Moraceae family, particularly in Mediterranean and subtropical climatic zones.

Host plants: The primary host of Microparlatoria fici is the fig tree (Ficus carica). The pest infests stems, leaves, and fruits, creating dense colonies that can significantly stress the plant. While primarily focused on figs, heavy infestations may occasionally extend to other woody plants in the immediate vicinity.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves a motile nymph stage, known as a crawler, which disperses across the host plant before settling. Once a suitable feeding site is found, the nymph anchors itself and secretes a waxy protective shield. Multiple generations occur throughout the growing season, with the rate of reproduction closely tied to warm temperatures and humidity levels.

Damage and economic impact: The pest causes damage by inserting its stylets into the plant tissue to feed on sap. This process leads to yellowing, foliage chlorosis, fruit distortion, and bark cracking. Severe infestations stunt plant growth and can cause branch dieback, ultimately reducing both the yield and the aesthetic quality of the fig crop.
