Nagelus obscurus is a species of ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Dolichodoridae. These microscopic roundworms thrive in the soil, inhabiting the rhizosphere of various plant species. As an ectoparasite, it remains mostly outside the root tissue, utilizing its specialized stylet to puncture root epidermal cells and extract cytoplasmic contents for nutrition.

The primary hosts for this nematode include various cereals such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as specific grasses. The presence of the pest is often correlated with specific soil types that retain adequate moisture, which is essential for the nematode's mobility. By concentrating in the rhizosphere, large populations can significantly impact the nutrient uptake efficiency of the affected plants.

The life cycle of this species comprises an egg stage, four successive larval molts, and the adult stage. The transition between these phases is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly soil temperature and humidity. Under favorable conditions, the population density can rise rapidly, ensuring a constant supply of individuals ready to feed on the root systems of host crops during their peak growth phase.

Damage caused by Nagelus obscurus is often systemic. Feeding activity leads to reduced root volume, impaired water uptake, and stunted overall plant development.
