Neodolichodorus is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes within the order Tylenchida and the family Dolichodoridae. These nematodes are recognized as ectoparasites, meaning they remain outside the root tissues while feeding on them, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant through constant nutrient extraction.

This pest affects a wide array of crops, showing a preference for grasses, cereals, and various ornamental plants. They are particularly problematic in sandy soil conditions, which provide the necessary pore spaces for nematode movement and survival, especially in regions with consistent soil moisture.

The biology of Neodolichodorus revolves around their life cycle in the rhizosphere. After hatching, the juveniles move through the soil profile towards the root tips. Using their specialized stylet, they pierce the root cells to extract the cytoplasm. They do not enter the root but cause cellular damage through the injection of digestive enzymes.

The primary symptom of infestation is the stunted development of the root system. Roots often appear shortened, swollen, and display necrotic lesions or discoloration. Above ground, this manifests as reduced plant vigor, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), and poor yield, as the root system is unable to effectively absorb water and nutrients.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural practices and chemical intervention. Crop rotation with non-host species is essential to break the life cycle. Maintaining optimal soil fertility and organic matter content can also help plants withstand damage. In high-pressure fields, the application of specific nematicides is recommended to reduce soil population levels before planting.
