As a drywood termite, it does not require contact with the soil to obtain moisture, which allows it to thrive entirely within the woody tissues of its host plants. This biology makes it a significant challenge for foresters and orchard managers.

The pest primarily affects a wide range of woody perennial crops. In agricultural settings, it is a known problem for fruit trees, particularly mango and tea bushes. By nesting within the trunks and large branches, the termites systematically consume the heartwood, often causing internal damage that remains invisible until the tree becomes severely compromised.

The biology of Neotermes bosei centers on established colonies hidden deep inside the wood. The colony structure lacks true workers; instead, nymphs perform all necessary tasks, including feeding and gallery excavation. Periodic swarming events involving winged reproductives are the primary method of dispersal, enabling the infestation of new trees in the surrounding area.

As they create extensive galleries, they weaken the tree's internal architecture, leading to reduced nutrient transport and structural instability. This vulnerability often results in broken branches, reduced fruit yields, and the eventual death of the affected trees during severe weather events.
