The chestnut drywood termite (Neotermes castaneus) is a wood-infesting insect species belonging to the order Isoptera and the family Kalotermitidae. Unlike subterranean termites, this species completes its entire life cycle within the wood, requiring no contact with the soil to survive.
This pest affects a wide range of woody hosts, including various fruit trees and ornamental landscaping species. It typically colonizes trees through bark crevices, wounds, or existing cavities, eventually tunneling deep into the heartwood to establish its colony and feed on the cellulose.
The biology of Neotermes castaneus is characterized by a social colony structure. Their life cycle comprises eggs, nymphs, and adult castes.
