Neotermes dalbergiae is a species of drywood termite belonging to the family Kalotermitidae. As members of the order Blattodea, these insects are specialized in colonizing dry, sound wood without requiring a direct connection to soil moisture, which sets them apart from subterranean termite species.

This pest primarily infests woody plants, with a notable preference for Dalbergia species. The colony establishes itself deep within the heartwood or sapwood of the tree, creating complex gallery systems that compromise the internal structure and longevity of the host plant.

The biology of Neotermes dalbergiae is characterized by a social caste system comprising nymphs, workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Their lifecycle involves hemimetabolous metamorphosis. Because the entire colony resides within the wood, they are protected from environmental fluctuations and many surface-applied pesticides, making them challenging to eradicate.

Damage is manifested as hollowed-out internal galleries, often filled with distinctive pellet-like frass. This structural damage reduces the timber quality and overall vigor of the tree. Severe infestations can lead to total tree collapse or render the wood commercially useless, posing a significant risk to forestry and botanical collections.

Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative and curative methods. Surveillance is critical for early detection through visual inspection for frass or exit holes. Treatment options include localized fumigation, high-pressure injection of systemic insecticides (such as fipronil) into infested galleries, and the removal of severely affected branches or entire trees to prevent the spread of the colony.
